The annual Island Celebration holiday house and business decorating contest judging on Ocracoke will be the evening of Friday, Dec. 20.
Theresa O’Neal, owner of the Island Ragpicker, will recruit four disinterested vacationers to ride around with her and her husband, Albert, that night to do the judging.
The contest is sponsored by the Ocracoke Civic and Business Association, and winners will receive a sign that night at their properties and will also receive a certificate. Signs will be up until sometime after Jan. 1.
This year, there will be five winners. Among the judging categories are “Best Theme,” “Most Original, “Most Traditional” and “Best Business.”
Theresa said she would love to see the holiday boat parade revived sometime, a tradition that she last recalls seeing in 1999.
“The lighted boats would sail around Silver Lake and it was so beautiful seeing all the lights reflected on the water,” she said. “It would be something nice for us to do in the off season.”
