DOT awards contracts for $1.9 million for resurfacing in Dare County
The North Carolina Department of Transportation Chief Operating Officer Jim Trogdon has announced that 20 contracts totaling $159 million have been awarded for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina, including one project funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and $1.9 million for resurfacing roadways in Dare County.
NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law.
The recovery project is located in Wake County.
The other projects are located in Brunswick, Catawba, Chatham, Dare, Davidson, Davie, Franklin, Forsyth, Gates, Hertford, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, New Hanover, Northampton, Pender, Randolph, Richmond, Rowan, Stokes, Vance and Warren counties.
The bids received on all 20 projects advertised came in 6.7 percent, or about $11.4 million, below NCDOT estimates.
The project in Dare County includes resurfacing:
U.S. 64 from the Alligator River Bridge to Old U.S. 64 and U.S. 264 to Old U.S. 64
U.S. 64/264 from M. Collins Drive to Harriot Street
N.C. 12 from Plover Drive to just north of Dune Road in Duck and Eagle Pass to Austin Road in Hatteras village
N.C. 345 from Thicket Lump Street to Old N.C. 345.
A $1.9 million contract was awarded to RPC Contracting Inc. of Kitty Hawk for the work. Work can begin as early as March 15, with final completion no later than Nov. 1.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, every $1 million spent on transportation creates 30 jobs, and according to the construction industry, every dollar invested in transportation generates $6 in economic impact.
