Practice hand grenade causes scare at Cape Hatteras Elementary School
The Dare County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a hand grenade at Cape Hatteras Elementary School on Wednesday, March 2.
Shortly after 3 p.m., after classes had ended for the day, school officials reported to School Resource Officer Nathan Lusk that they had taken what they thought was a hand grenade from a student’s backpack in the area of the school buses.
Sheriff’s office deputies, investigators, and deputies were on scene and secured and evacuated the school and parking lots.
The device was located in an office at the school.
Buxton Volunteer Fire Department and Dare County Emergency Medical Service staged near the scene for precautionary purposes.
On-scene supervisors contacted Sandy Sanderson, Dare County’s Emergency Management coordinator, who determined that the device was an inert, training hand grenade with no explosive potential.
The device was recovered and secured by deputies.
Sheriff’s office investigators have interviewed a student and a parent, and the investigation is ongoing today.
