Abbreviated ferry schedule will now continue through April 18
The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division has extended the amended schedules at its Swan Quarter-Ocracoke and Cedar Island-Ocracoke routes through Monday, April 18.
There will be one run only at the Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route through Monday, in order to move the ferry to Cedar Island to accommodate the heaviest amount of reservation traffic.
The schedule for Friday through Monday is as follows:
Departing Cedar Island for Ocracoke at 7:30 a.m., 10 and 1 p.m.;
Departing Ocracoke for Cedar Island at 7:30 a.m., 10 and 4:30 p.m.;
Departing Swan Quarter for Ocracoke at 4:30 p.m.; and
Departing Ocracoke for Swan Quarter at 12:45 p.m.
The Motor Vessel Silver Lake, built in 1965, is scheduled to be inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard Monday, and once the boat is approved, schedules at both of these locations will go back to the normal spring schedules. A second Sound Class boat, the MV Pamlico, is currently in the shipyard for its dry dock period and is slated to be inspected in May in time to go on the run for the summer schedule.
NCDOT awarded contracts to build two new sound-class vessels to serve this route to Orange Shipbuilding Co. The new ferries are currently under construction and are expected to be delivered later this year and in 2012.
