Surfing: A warm-water day in March, Part 2 ….WITH SLIDE SHOW

Days like Friday, March 11, at Cape Hatteras are few and far between.

I got to the beach that morning just as the sun was coming up.

The wind was out of the west at 25 to 30 mph, and it was really cold out there.  In fact, it was miserable standing there looking at the surf.

I was with some surfing friends, and we checked out a few different spots, but really couldn’t decide on where to surf.  We were playing the “tide game.” Some spots break better on a high tide, while others are better at low tide.

We did notice one thing while we checking all of the different breaks.  There were Portuguese man-of-wars all over the beach.  And they were not small ones. It was weird to see them in the winter.  They blow in off the Gulf Stream, which means warm water.

At the Avon Pier, we decided to put our hands in the water. We couldn’t believe the water temperature.  It felt like you were putting your hand into a microwave – it was that warm.
You have to understand that the water temperature two days before was in the mid-40s.

My friends ended up surfing all day.

I shot photos from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. and was fried at the end of the day.
