A Rodanthe man was killed and three others were injured in an accident Tuesday night
A Rodanthe man was killed and three others were injured in an accident Tuesday night on the closed portion of Highway 12 south of the breach on the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol says that Gary Wade Midgett, 44, died when the pickup truck in which he was riding crashed into a flatbed semi-trailer parked in the highway in an area that the Department of Transportation and its contractors are repairing.
The driver of the truck, Willard Blevins Smith, 45, also of Rodanthe has been charged with driving while intoxicated and driving on a revoked license. Other charges are pending, according to the Highway Patrol.
Smith and two female passengers were injured and taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
The two women were identified as Danielle Marie Elizabeth Ring, 44, of Silver Spring, Md., and Constance Tia Lane, 31, of Salvo.
The condition of the injured was not available on Wednesday afternoon.
The Highway Patrol said that the pickup truck driven by Smith went past barricades just north of Rodanthe, where Highway 12 has been closed for repairs since Hurricane Irene cut several breaches on the island, and hit the flatbed truck south of the New New Inlet about 10:43 p.m.
