BUXTON– Elmore Ross Gray, Sr., 89, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 at hisresidence. Born in Avon, he was the son of the late Elmore Gray(deceased at Elmore’s third month of life) and Annie Gray Midgett andwas the widower of Charlotte R. Gray. He was raised by his mother,Annie, and his beloved father, Warren R. Midgett.
Mr. Gray wasa retired chief petty officer with the U.S. Coast Guard, having servedhis country honorably for 20 years and was a retired superintendentwith the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s FerryDivision. He was a member of the Buxton United Methodist Church, alifetime Member the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club, a life member of theCoinjock Chapter No. 218 Order of Eastern Star, a 63-year member of theCape Hatteras Masonic Lodge 698, and a member of theShrine. He served as Past Worthy Patron in the EasternStar. He was the Past Master in 1976 and 1987 of the CapeHatteras Lodge and District Deputy for the third Masonic District ofNorth Carolina.
Mr. Gray is survived by a daughter, KarenBenton and husband, Tom, of Buxton; a son, Sonny Gray, and wife,Melody, of Midlothian, Va.; two sisters, Grace Jennette and MildredBurrus and husband, Calvin, all of Buxton; two grandchildren, RossThomas Benton and Michelle Milstead and husband, John; and twogreat-grandchildren, Jack and Annie Milstead.
A funeral servicewas held on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Buxton United Methodist Church withthe Rev. Ken Davenport officiating. Burial was in the Gray FamilyCemetery.
