KILLDEVIL HILLS — Dominic James “Nick” Aven died suddenly on July 30, 2016in Kill Devil Hills of a massive heart attack. Born July 1,1962in Connecticut, he had just turned 54. After graduating from Maury HighSchool in 1981, he headed for Outer Banks, residing in Hatteras andlater settling in Kill Devil Hills. He was predeceased by his fatherDonald Aven in 2010. In Kill Devil Hills, he managed the BikeBarn for more than 31 years, up to the day he died. He was a bikemechanic by trade and a surfer by life. He traveled far and near forthe better wave, making many memories and lifelongfriends.
Left to celebrate the memory of Nick Aven is his loving mother, Millie,of Norfolk and Kitty Hawk; three brothers — David of Norfolk, Rusty ofKitty Hawk, and John of Greenville, S.C., and Virginia Beach,Va.;one sister, Kathy Sue Antonio, and husband, Brian, ofHuntingtown, Md.; two nephews, Andrew Antonio of Maryland and KaelanAven of Florida; a niece, Rachel Antonio of Arlington, Va.; two aunts,Gloria Aguilar of Caldwell, N.J., and Joy Vermilyea and husband,Dave, of Marshallville, Ga.; one uncle, Carl Aven, and wife, Bonna ofRoswell, Ga. Besides family, Nick will be remembered by many close andlong-time friends, many of whom share his passion for surfing.
Friendsand family may view Thursday, Aug. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at GallopFuneral Services in Nags Head. Friday, Aug. 5, will be the Massof Resurrection at Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish in Kitty Hawk at 4 p.m.
