HATTERAS– Lester Bascom Ballance, 92, died on Feb. 24, 2015 at SentaraVirginia Beach General Hospital. A native of Hatteras, he was the sonof the late Victor L. Ballance and Rachel Gray Ballance. Lester retiredfrom the United States Navy as a Boatswain’s Mate Second Class (BM2)and was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. He returned to Hatteras afterretiring and worked as a mate on charter boats for several years. Helater went to work with the National Park Service for several years. Hethen crabbed until he was 76 years old on board his boat named the OldGarland, and crabbed for over 25 years. Mr. Ballance is predeceased byhis wife, Emilia Ann O’Buch Ballance, and two sisters, Delma B. Millerand husband, E.J., and Ermany B. Robinson and husband, Marvin.
He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Association and a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church.
Lesteris survived by a daughter, Faye Ballance Foster and husband, Desmond“Buddy” R. Jr.; a son, Victor L. Ballance; grandchildren, Marshall B.Foster and wife, Ashleigh, and Krystal Ann Foster; nieces, ElaineMiller, Lana Webb, Susie Freeman, Andrea Williams, and VickyCasonshews; nephews, Wayne E. Miller and Charlie “Punk” Robinson andwife, Marion; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to thank everyone for their support, prayers and love during “Pop’s” illness.
Afuneral service will be held at Hatteras United Methodist Church onThursday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dwight Burrus and Rev. KenDavenport officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives atthe church prior to the service, from noon until 2 p.m. Burial willtake place at the Ballance family cemetery.
