The Pea Island Preservation Society just finished its annual essay contest for all Dare County 4th graders as a follow-up to presentations that were given around the county earlier in the school year.
The winners were announced at each school last Thursday, February 28, in front of their peers with their respective principals, teachers and parents present, and the winners included Cape Hatteras Elementary School student Brody Paddock, who won Second Place in the county-wide competition.
As with last year, participants were asked to write a short essay on the character traits of Keeper Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Crew. The winners received certificates along with a $100/$75/$50 gift card to the first, second and third place winners, respectively.

The Pea Island Preservation Society reported that they received a record number of 177 entries this year, and stated that “it was clear that overall these children truly understood the importance of hard work, teamwork and being kind to others.”
