County Purchasing Old PNC Bank Building in Buxton

The Dare County Board of Commissioners unanimously agreed to purchase the former PNC Bank building located at 47013 Buxton Back Road at their early June meeting for the price of $320,000.

“We’re buying it at less than what [the owner] wanted to sell it for, but for what our tax appraisers say its worth,” said County Manager Bobby Outten.

Outten noted at the meeting that the building, which is located adjacent to the Fessenden Center Annex, could have several uses in the future. For one, it could provide extra parking for meetings, elections, and other events that take place at the Fessenden Center Annex. “We’ve had problems at the Fessenden Center Annex with parking,” said Outten. “…Oftentimes, we have nowhere to put the cars there. This will solve some of that problem.”

For another, it could eventually replace the older Annex structure as the site of future meetings and events.

“I’ve gone down and looked at the building, and it’s in pretty good shape,” said Outten. “It’s a much bigger building than the Fessenden Center Annex, and it will be a nice community asset for meetings – not only for us, but for other things that are happening. It will [also] be a nice place to hold elections.”

Commissioner House motioned to approve the agreement to purchase, and to authorize the County Manager to execute all necessary documents. The Board also authorized Outten to make the necessary changes needed to the property description outlined in the agreement.

Commissioner Couch seconded the motion, and the resolution to purchase the Buxton property was passed unanimously by the Board of Commissioners.
