FEMA Individual Assistance Application Denied; Governor has 30 Days to Appeal
Per an October 8 letter to Gov. Cooper, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has denied a request from the state of North Carolina for individual assistance for the victims of Hurricane Dorian in Dare, Hyde, Carteret and New Hanover counties.
“Based on our review of all the information available, including the results of joint federal, state, and local government Preliminary Damage Assessments it has been determined that the impact to individuals and households from this event is not of such severity and magnitude to warrant the designation of Individual Assistance,” read the letter from Jeff Byard, Associate Administrator for FEMA’s Office of Response and Recovery.
Gov. Cooper sent a request for FEMA public assistance, (or assistance for the state of N.C.), on September 13, and sent the request for individual assistance on September 21. The request for public assistance was approved on Friday, October 4.
Sixth District state Rep. Bobby Hanig of Currituck County announced the new development on social media late Tuesday, noting that the “Governor can appeal decision within 30 days.”
