N.C. Highway 12 closed from Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe; Coastal storm will continue through Wednesday
Per a Wednesday morning update from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), N.C. Highway 12 is currently closed from Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe. There is deep sand and some ocean overwash in several places due to the strong storm affecting the area, and NCDOT crews are currently working to clear the roadway.
The coastal flood threat is still ongoing for many locations along the Outer Banks, per the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office. Minor soundside inundation of 1 to 2 feet above ground is possible for southern Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island, and high surf, beach erosion, and ocean overwash are also possible throughout the day. A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect through Wednesday.
Soundside flooding was reported in Hatteras village along Eagle Pass Road and in Frisco on early Wednesday morning, however, water levels should improve later this afternoon and evening.
Wind gusts of 50 mph or more were reported in some locations, and will slowly diminish late this morning and afternoon.
