Aquarium releases rehabilitated sea turtles on Hatteras Island
Happy news! Aquarium staff released 11 sea turtles from the beach south of Avon, NC this week! Three Kemp’s ridley turtles and eight greens met the ocean again after being successfully rehabilitated from cold-stunning this past winter. Each turtle was cleared for release after a final checkup from the NC Aquariums veterinary team.
Thanks to our partners with Cape Hatteras National Seashore for all their assistance. There are currently 15 patients in the STAR Center.
I am glad this is done with staff only. I attended one of the public releases thinking they would let them go in the ocean or close to edge. They did this but not until they had carried them around a horseshoe shaped audience. As concerned as people are about animals this was completely unnecessary and made a spectacle of their whole operation. This is much like going to the circus to see the midgets, bearded lady or tallest man.
