NPS seeks information in Hatteras deer poaching incident

Cape Hatteras National Seashore law enforcement officials are seeking the public’s help in solving the case of a  deer that was illegally shot and killed in Cape Hatteras National Seashore during the week of Dec. 14. 

According to a news release from the seashore, the deer was shot between the towns of Salvo and Avon and beheaded.  The male deer, seen previously on several occasions by park staff and residents, possessed a large rack of antlers, making it a potential trophy animal for this area.  The remainder of the carcass was left to rot on the ground.

“Other than limited waterfowl hunting opportunities, hunting for wildlife is not permitted at any time within the boundaries of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and the activities of shooting or taking of wildlife is a criminal offense,” the news release said. “Illegal hunters are prosecuted to the full extent of the law and potentially face heavy fines, restitution costs, jail time, forfeiture of crime-associated personal property, including weapons and vehicles, and loss of hunting privileges in the state of North Carolina.”
