UPDATE: N.C. Highway 12 reopens after Tuesday afternoon accident

Per multiple reports, N.C. Highway 12 has reopened in both directions following a traffic accident north of Rodanthe on Tuesday, May 11.

Traffic on northern Hatteras Island was at a standstill for the majority of Tuesday afternoon, due to a dump truck that had overturned near the Jug Handle Bridge on Pea Island, blocking both lanes of N.C. Highway 12.

Dare County EMS, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, and local Hatteras Island fire departments responded to the scene, and it is currently unknown whether there were any injuries from the accident.

Travelers should expect moderate delays, as traffic is backed up from Rodanthe to Oregon Inlet. The Island Free Press will continue to post updates as soon as they are available.
