WANCHESE — Jean Ambroise Domingue, 89 years old, of Wanchese, NC died May 22, 2021. He was the son of a sharecropper born 30 May 1931, in Lafayette Parish, Lafayette, LA. He worked on a farm and dairy and joined the United States Navy at the age of 17. In 1968, he retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Mr. Domingue worked as a tailor for eight years and in accounting in the supply department for twelve years. He then retired from the State of North Carolina as a bridge tender operator. He later retired as a sheriff’s deputy in the legal division in Charleston, WV.
Mr. Domingue was a master gardener and gave many vegetables away to his friends and neighbors. Throughout his lifetime he was involved in grafting pecan, apple, and pear trees. He did woodwork and made violins, children’s rocking chairs, lighthouses, and various birdhouses. He also learned how to cane chairs. Mr. Dominque loved country and Cajun music and country gospel songs. He played the guitar, fiddle, and harmonica.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Daniels Domingue; two stepchildren, John Edward Chabay and wife Deanna and Susan Chabay Buchenberger and husband John; five grandchildren, Amanda Chabay Robinson (Barry), Dr. Elizabeth Chabay Osmundsen (Erik), Daniel Buchenberger (Sara), Emily Buchenberger (Ben), and Stephen Buchenberger; one great-grandchild, Sonja Elise Osmundsen; several nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ambroise and Emma Latiolais Domingue; four brothers, Paul, Felix, Alton, and Jean Cleophe Domingue; two sisters, Regina Mouton Venable and Isabelle Domingue LeBlanc, all from the Lafayette area.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo, NC. The family will receive friends and relatives immediately following the service in the funeral home lobby. Private burial will take place at Cudworth Cemetery in Wanchese, NC.
