Remnants of Tropical Storm Claudette could impact the Outer Banks on Sunday and Monday

Tropical Storm Claudette formed on Saturday morning over coastal Louisiana, and though the system is expected lose tropical characteristics over land this weekend, the remnants will bring several impacts to Eastern NC, including heavy rains, high wind gusts, and the potential for coastal flooding, per a recent update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.

Strong south to southwest winds could lead to soundside flooding on Monday morning, and especially for the northern Outer Banks from Avon to Duck. On the oceanside, 6-10 ft. waves are currently forecast for Sunday and Monday from Surf City to Oregon Inlet, with a high threat of dangerous surf and rip currents.

1 to 3 inches of rainfall is forecast for Eastern NC through Monday, however, locally higher amounts of rainfall are possible, and there is an elevated risk of severe thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes. Many of these details are somewhat vague, as uncertainty remains on the exact track and strength of the system. The remnants could also reform/re-strengthen as the circulation moves off the NC coast on Monday.
