Tropical storm could develop this weekend; Ocean overwash and coastal flooding possible
An area of low pressure could develop into a tropical or subtropical storm over the Gulf Stream and head towards the North Carolina coastline this weekend, per a recent update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.
Depending on the storm’s possible development, there is the potential for strong winds, coastal flooding, (which will be enhanced by the weekend’s King Tides), and ocean overwash. Heavy rain may also be a concern, with up to 3 inches of rainfall possible through Monday morning.
The most likely timing of potential sounside flooding or ocean overwash is Saturday night and Sunday. A high risk of rip currents is also in effect for all beaches along Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island on Friday, October 8. A high risk of rip currents means that the surf zone is dangerous for all levels of swimmers, and beachgoers should stay out of the water.
The public should check surf and swimming conditions before heading to the beach, and the daily beach forecast at www.weather.gov/beach/mhx includes rip current risk levels, and information about other hazards along the beach. In addition, visitors are encouraged to sign up for text alerts from Dare County, ocean rescue agencies, and the National Weather Service by texting “OBXBeachConditions” to 77295.
