Soundside flooding reported on Friday morning

Minor to moderate soundside flooding was reported on Friday morning in several locations along Hatteras Island, including Hatteras, Frisco and the Tri-villages, per multiple reports. N.C. Highway 12 had standing water in these locations, but was open and passable throughout Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands.

“Deputies on Hatteras Island report water on the roadway in Salvo from Otter Way to Colony Dr.,” stated the Dare County Sheriff’s Office in a 6:30 a.m. press release. “Water is expected to come up in other areas on Hatteras Island as well.”

Due to strong westerly winds, soundside flooding up to 2 feet above ground level is possible through Friday morning, January 7, per the National Weather Service. Water levels should subside by this afternoon.

The Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry route has been temporarily suspended due to high wind gusts, per an update from the N.C. Ferry System. The morning routes for Ocracoke-Cedar Island and Ocracoke-Swan Quarter have been canceled as well. Service will remain suspended until conditions improve, and it’s safe to resume operations.

Due to road conditions, Cape Hatteras Secondary School and Cape Hatteras Elementary School are closed on Friday, January 7.
