Severe weather possible on Sunday; Excessive heat forecast for Monday and Tuesday

Severe weather is possible for the Outer Banks on Sunday afternoon and evening, per an update from the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport / Morehead City office.

Scattered thunderstorms, some severe, are forecast from mid-afternoon into this evening, and especially for the northern coastal plain of Eastern N.C., which includes Greene, Pitt, and Martin counties.

The main threats will be damaging wind gusts and large hail, although an isolated tornado will also be possible. Torrential downpours will occur in the strongest storms, and the timing for potential severe weather will be from roughly 3-11 p.m.

Excessive heat is also expected across the area early this week with highs in the mid-90s on Monday and Tuesday. The hot temperatures will be accompanied by high humidity producing dangerous Heat Index values. On Monday, Heat Index values up to 100 degrees are expected, which will increase up to 105 degrees on Tuesday along the Outer Banks.
