New CHEC Public EV Charging Stations Up and Running By JOY CRIST
On Tuesday morning, Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) announced that its two new public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations were up and running.
One station is installed in Rodanthe in the parking lot of Kitty Hawk Kites, and the second station is installed at Hatteras Landing in Hatteras Village. The Level 2 ChargePoint stations each have two charging ports and are capable of charging any brand of EV. On average, it will take a driver 3.5 hours to fully charge their vehicle with a Level 2 station.
It is CHEC’s hope that the public stations will attract new visitors to Hatteras Island and pave the way for the future of EVs in the area.
Initially, the charging stations will be free to use, while the cooperative collects valuable data about usage and driver habits.
