“Welcome to Avon” sign stolen from north end of the village
On July 31, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a local Avon resident that the sign on the north end of Avon that says, “Welcome to Avon, Historically Named Kinnakeet,” had been stolen sometime on or around July 30.
This sign is approximately 6 ft. by 4 ft. and would have taken a moment to remove and steal since it was bolted to the posts that were left behind.
“Dare County and the towns and villages that reside in it take pride in our area and try to make it a great experience for those who visit,” stated the Sheriff’s Office in a press release. “This sign is part of letting those who come here know where they are but also a little history lesson as well.”
“If you have any information on who may have taken this sign please contact the Dare County Sheriff’s Office at 252-475-5980 M-F 8:30 to 5:00 or Dare County Communications Center at 252-473-3444 anytime. We greatly appreciate any assistance in locating those who felt the need to take the sign and a piece of history with them.”
