Highlights from the November 5 BOC Meeting
The Dare County Board of Commissioners (BOC) covered a number of Outer Banks-related issues and achievements at their November 5 meeting in Manteo.
Topics which pertained to the island and / or the local community included the following.
Budget Amendment Approved to Dredge Hatteras Inlet
The BOC approved a budget amendment to allow for maintenance dredging of Hatteras Inlet in December.
Organizational Structure of the Dare County Commission for Working Watermen Approved
The BOC approved the organizational structure of the recently revived Dare County Commission for Working Watermen, as proposed by point person Commissioner Steve House. The new format of the commission will include seven seats, as well as one non-voting science seat. The seven seats will be comprised of a Dare County Commissioner, a fish house dealer, a charter boat captain, and four seats of Dare County, N.C. fishermen, with the goal of having representation from Hatteras Island, Roanoke Island, the mainland, and the northern beaches.
Approval of Conditional Use Permit for Hatteras Shores Group Housing Development
The BOC approved a Conditional Use Permit (CPU) and Site Plan for a proposed group housing development to be constructed on the oceanfront in Hatteras village at 56693 N.C. Highway 12. Located on two plots of land that will be merged into one, the site plan was originally reviewed and approved by the Dare County Planning Board at their October 8 meeting.
New Animal Shelter Moves Forward
The BOC authorized the firm of Waller, Todd and Sadler to perform Architectural and Design Services for the new Animal Shelter in Dare County.
Golf Carts in Wanchese Public Hearing
Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Monday, November 19 at 5:30 p.m. to receive input about allowing golf carts to operate in the village of Wanchese on roads where the speed limit is 35 mph or less. According to Planning Director Donna Creef, there are 25 public roads that qualify.
