Windy, Rainy Weather Headed for the Islands Starting Monday Night
Thunderstorms and showers with gusty winds are forecast for Hatteras and Ocracoke islands beginning Monday night due to a low pressure crossing the coastal North Carolina area, per a Monday afternoon update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.
The strongest storms are expected to develop between midnight and sunrise on Tuesday morning, with gusty winds in the 20-30 mph range lingering throughout the day on Tuesday.
Heavy thunderstorms accompanied by 1 to 2 inches of rainfall is likely, with isolated locations receiving as much as 3 inches of rain. Although the inundation of rain could lead to the flooding of low lying or poor drainage areas, no major effects to the islands are anticipated with the storm.
Strong southerly winds and increasing seas could also result in minor coastal erosion and wave run-up, but significant coastal flooding is not expected. The largest seas and waves will occur Tuesday morning, with high tide occurring between 11 a.m. and noon along the beaches.
