Outer Banks could see coastal flooding, strong winds later this week
Confidence is increasing that the Outer Banks could see impacts from a storm system that will move through the region later this week, bringing strong winds, rough surf, and possible coastal flooding, per an update from the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City office.
From Thursday through Saturday, December 22-24, an unusually strong cold front will bring winds of 25-40 mph, (with gusts up to 50 mph), colder than normal temperatures and wind chill values, and moderate to heavy rainfall.
Rough surf could lead to minor beach erosion, especially in areas with compromised dune systems, and oceanside and/or soundside flooding is possible, although it is too early to determine the severity of these impacts.
Unusually cold temperatures are also forecast for Friday and Saturday, which may include temperatures and wind chill values in the teens or single digits.
