James D. Charlet of Salvo, AKA Keeper James, will present a program about our connection to the Titanic at the Hatteras Weather Bureau in Hatteras Village on Friday, April 14 at 1:00 p.m.
The well-known tragic sinking of the White Star liner RMS Titanic is THE most documented with media coverage of any shipwreck in all of world history. Yet, although new findings, a plethora of theories, and many mysteries still surround the event, there remains one major connection still absent from any movie or TV documentary.
That connection is not only little-known, but it is also a shocking one. The connection is between the Titanic’s catastrophe and Hatteras Island.
That sad saga is the detailed subject of Chapter 18 of James’ Globe Pequot book, Shipwrecks of the Outer Banks: Dramatic Rescues and Fantastic Wrecks in the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The program, however, will be a summary and readings of excerpts from his book. More details are there.
“Although I have presented in many different places away from home, the ones I can do on my home island of Hatteras I love the best,” said Keeper James.
He also said the Cape Hatteras National Seashore was instrumental in helping to have this presentation in the beautifully restored Hatteras Weather Bureau Museum also functioning as an Outer Banks Visitors Bureau Welcome Center to our amazing island.
