AVON — Robert Max Gray, Sr., 90, known to his friends and family as Bobby, passed away on June 14, 2023, at The Outer Banks Hospital.
A native of Avon, NC, he was born on May 23, 1933, to the late Isabelle Scarborough Gray and Robert Watson Gray. After retirement, Bobby returned to his birthplace.
Bobby had a long and distinguished career, having retired from both the United States Coast Guard and the National Park Service. He also owned and operated Gray’s Texaco, where he worked tirelessly to serve his community.
Bobby was a frequent visitor of the Avon Worship Center, where he found solace and comfort in his faith. He will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind and generous man who always put others before himself.
In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by two sons, Steven Douglas Gray and Robert Max Gray, Jr., and one sister, Rebecca Gray.
He is survived by his loving wife, Esta Gray; daughter, Rhonda Gray of Avon, NC, his son, Virgil Gray (Dorothy) of Cape May, NJ; his sister, Lois Miller (Dallas) of Avon, NC, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, June 19, 2023, at Heritage Church – Avon. Private burial will take place in the Gray family cemetery in Buxton.
Bobby will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched during his time on this earth.
