Hatteras Island community is encouraged to contribute to Estuaries Magazine: A Visual Arts and Literary Review

Submissions are still being accepted for Estuaries: A Visual Arts and Literary Review, and while the January 31 deadline is imminent, Editor Jill Lettieri hopes that the Hatteras Island community will contribute, and contribute in earnest.

Estuaries is an annual visual arts and literary journal featuring poetry, fiction, non-fiction, photography, and art that is created by College of The Albemarle (COA) students, employees, and community members.

Founded in 2014 as a way to link all COA communities together, Hatteras Island has been underrepresented in past editions, despite being home to a thriving community of artists, writers, and creative types of all varieties.

“We have had very few people from Hatteras Island published in it, that I know of,” said Lettieri. “[But] I have spoken to Justin Paxton in the art department at Cape Hatteras and Jordan Tomberlin in the English department to encourage student and staff participation there. We have so many talented high schoolers alone, that I [am] hoping to get some submissions from them.”

“We have so many amazing professional and aspiring artists on the island that I would love to see their work presented to a new audience,” she added. “Even if they are already professionals, it is a beautiful, full-color magazine that showcases their work in a different way. Our art editor works with the Dare County Arts Council, and we usually get quite a number of submissions from that group.”

Best of all, participants in this year’s Estuaries are automatically invited to the March 26 Launch Party at the COA campus in Manteo, which will feature food, fun, and an opportunity to meet and mingle with writers and artists from all across the Outer Banks.

“For anyone who is a writer and looking to publish, this is an excellent way to start,” said Lettieri. “The process of submitting the writing, then creating a third person biography, and then working with an editor to get the work accepted, and finally the opportunity to attend a release party is something not many writers get to experience.”
