Mary Kathleen Feeney of Kill Devil Hills passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024, at the age of 88.
A devoted wife and mother, Mary is survived by James, her loving husband of 68 years; daughters Jane, Karen (Ed), Nancy (Tim), Mary (John), Maggie (Lauron), and Kellie (Travis); grandsons Daniel (Alyssa), Kevin (Amanda), Joe (Bea), Jack, Marc, Luke, and Johan; great-grandchildren Stephanie, Amanda, Robert, Donovan, Adam, Ava, and Charlotte; and great-great-granddaughter Hailie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clem and Catherine; her brothers William, John, and Joseph; her son Thomas; and her granddaughter Katharine.
Mary was born on November 16, 1935 in Davenport, Iowa, into a musical family. As a young girl, she followed in her mother’s footsteps as an organist at her church, despite being barely able to reach the pedals! She graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy, where she enjoyed writing and editing for the school newspaper, and took courses at Marycrest College and St. Ambrose College before beginning her professional career at Rock Island Arsenal, where she and her husband both worked.
A lifelong learner, Mary received her Associate’s Degree from Northern Virginia Community College, where she worked until retiring. It was during her time there that she discovered her passion for genealogy, which brought her unmatched research skills to bear.
Mary’s creative talents beyond the written word were many, from home decorating to sewing and upholstery to gardening. And she accomplished all of this while raising seven children! For this and for so many other reasons, she will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
