Avon Fishing Pier will reopen for the 2024 season on May 3
The Avon Fishing Pier will open for the 2024 season on Friday, May 3, from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., per an update from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and pier operators.
Starting on Memorial Day Weekend, the pier’s hours will be extended to 6:00 a.m. until 10 p.m.
In previous years, the Avon Fishing Pier had a late start to the season due to damage from nor’easters or hurricanes. However, despite numerous storms during the 2023/2024 winter months, the pier had minimal maintenance issues to address before opening for the summer of 2024.
“We replaced some decking boards, and some braces [for the railings], but there was no major damage,” said Keith Matthews, Avon Pier Manager. “The pier is 61 years old, so there is always some maintenance to do before we open.”
The Avon Pier will also once again host Hatteras Island’s Independence Day fireworks, which are also returning for 2024, and which will be launched from the end of the pier on July 4.
Hatteras Island currently has two fishing piers: The Avon Pier and the Rodanthe Pier, which will both be open throughout the summer and fall months.

It’s supremely weird that they open so late. Lots of impressive catches at the Rodanthe Pier since they opened … like over a month ago.
