OCRACOKE — Robert Wayne Self, 73, of Ocracoke, North Carolina, passed away on April 1, 2024. Wayne was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on July 24, 1950.
Wayne was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Judith Ann Groff. Wayne and Judy fell in love with Ocracoke when they first visited in the early 70s. After buying property in the 80s, they lived and loved in the home that Wayne designed and built.
In addition to his wife, Judy, he leaves behind his nephew, Scott Self, and his three girls, Allison, Corey, and Evie.
Wayne is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marianne Buerkle and husband Randy (deceased); sister-in-law, Susan Groff; brother-in-law, George Groff and wife, Linda.
Wayne was also a loving uncle to his niece Gretchen McNaughton and husband Rob and their two daughters, Emily and Ava McNaughton, his niece Amie Blanchette and husband Jon, his nephew Adam Groff, and his niece Lauren Groff.
Wayne was a skilled and talented carpenter with many hobbies. He had a unique ability to repurpose materials and create beautiful woodwork within his own home and so many others. He was an extremely creative craftsman.
Wayne had a passion for the outdoors. He loved both the mountains and the ocean. In the summer, he enjoyed gardening, tending to his fig trees, working in the garage, shooting his bow, fishing, and especially clamming trips in the Sound with his family. In the fall, Wayne and Judy spent time off the island at their camp in Pungo. They enjoyed hunting and sharing campfires with their dear friends.
Throughout his life, Wayne had a soft spot in his heart for animals. On Ocracoke, Wayne was active in supporting Ocracats and hand-made many feeding boxes seen throughout the island. Wayne was dedicated to caring for and feeding the island cats each morning.
Wayne leaves behind many talents and skills that he has shared with his family. His strong, quiet demeanor and authentic heart will be deeply missed by many friends, his family, and especially his loving wife, his Babe, Judy. May he rest in peace.
