Excessive Heat Warning in effect for the Outer Banks
12:30 P.M. UPDATE: An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for all of Eastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks, due to dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of up to 106 degrees on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.
The Excessive Heat Warning is effective until 7 p.m. on Monday, July 15.
Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Excessive heat is expected on Monday along the Outer Banks and throughout Eastern North Carolina with record or near-record high temperatures, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.
A Heat Advisory has been issued for all of Eastern N.C., including Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, for heat index values of 100-110 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Actual temperatures will be in the 80-90 degree range.
The intense heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Information on the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is listed below.
