KITTY HAWK — Susan Marable Pope, age 75, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on July 10, 2024. Susan was born on October 17, 1948, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Alford Marable and Caroline Tuck.
Susan is survived by her siblings, Leon Marable (Gail), June Milligan (Bob), and Gail Hurst (Herb); her husband of 55 years, Joseph N. Pope Jr.; her three sons, Larry Benjamin Pope (Trish), Joseph Christopher Pope (Brandy), and Timothy Tuck Pope (Crystal); her cherished grandchildren, Deanna Williams (Adam), Alexandra Pope, Austin Pope (Shannon), Kadin Pope, Bryan Pope, and Angelica Pope, and four great-grandchildren, Natalie, Logan, Kyler, and Christian. She is also survived by her many nieces, nephews, and cousins, who she adored greatly. She is preceded in death by her parents and her eldest sister, Carol Pugh.
Professionally, Susan worked in the insurance industry for many years. Outside of work, she found joy in her artistic pursuits, particularly at the beach, where she loved to draw and read. She pursued and earned a fine arts degree from Tidewater Community College after graduating from Churchland High School in 1966.
Susan dedicated much of her life to service and community with her commitment to volunteerism touching the lives of many. She was also a very active and dedicated member of the Catholic Church.
Susan will be remembered for her warm heart, creative spirit, and unwavering dedication to family and community. Her legacy, including the values and beliefs she instilled in her children, will continue to inspire. Her family is incredibly proud and grateful for her sacrifices and love.
Her most profound accomplishment was her dedication to the Navy Wives Clubs of America, INC. (NWCA), which she joined on December 13, 1973. She was a dedicated Navy Wife Member, Wife to her husband Joe, and mother to their three boys. Susan was a member of several NWCA clubs; Detroit #281, Eleanor Roosevelt #37, New Orleans #192, Tidewater #190, Portsmouth #221, Mayport #201, an Honorary Member of Memphis #119, and Member at Large at her passing. During her NWCA career, she served as their National President, National Vice President, Northeast Regional President, National Secretary, National Parliamentarian, Scholarship Director, Scholarship Secretary, Treasurer, and National Mimeo Chairman. Upon Joe’s retirement from the Navy, they moved to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for the easy life. Susan served with pride and honor in the NWCA for 51 years and she will be so missed by those who respected and loved her. She is now home with her Lord and Savior, so we will not say good-bye Pope until we meet again, we shall say Meeting Adjourned July 10, 2024.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Holy Redeemer By-the-Sea Catholic Church by Rev. John F. Hanley, osfs. Following the mass will be a celebration of life to be held at Vista Creek in Manteo, NC.
