WANCHESE — Donald Slye Payne, a native of Wanchese, NC, passed away on September 12, 2024, in Chesapeake, VA, at the age of 81. Born on March 13, 1943, Donald led a life marked by dedication and hard work.
Donald was a proud graduate of Dare County Public Schools. He served his country with honor as a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard for four years. After his military service, he worked diligently as a carpenter and home builder and later brought his expertise to the Dare County Department of Buildings and Grounds.
Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy Perry Payne; his twin sons, Larry Payne and Barry Payne; his mother, Ida Daniels Payne; his father, Wesley Corbet Payne; his half-sister, Volantill Castilia “Tot” Paquette; half-brothers, Woodrow Wilson Payne, Wesley Corbet Payne Jr., Clarence D. Payne, and William Dempsey Payne; brothers, Franklin Corbet Payne, Wesley Jarvis Payne Sr., Willie Lawrence Payne, and his twin brother, Ronald Guye Payne.
He is survived by his son, Eric Payne of Arlington, VA; daughters, Donna Payne of Manteo, NC, and Brenda Payne of Greenville, NC; and one grandchild, Derick Benjamin Baum of Patrick County, VA.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Twiford Colony Chapel. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service. A private burial will take place at Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk.
