MANTEO — Ronald E. Schmidt, a devoted family man and proud veteran, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2024, in Chesapeake, VA, at the age of 91, surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 12, 1933, in Camden, NJ, Ron led a life full of dedication and love.
Ron graduated from Roxbury High School in Succasunna, NJ, where he was known as an excellent baseball player. He went on to attend Drew University in Madison, NJ, before earning his degree from Upsala College in East Orange, NJ. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy, a testament to his enduring commitment to service.
Following his military service, Ron dedicated 35 years to Hercules, Inc., from which he retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and loyalty. An avid baseball fan, Ron found joy in rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals, a passion that he carried throughout his life. He was also an avid gardener and took pleasure in hosting family vacations.
Ron was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Sandra Williams Schmidt; his parents, Elsie Schmierer Schmidt and Raymond E. Schmidt; his sister, Carol Saccamanno; and his brother, Robert E. Schmidt.
His memory will be cherished by his surviving family: daughters Karen Schmidt Thompson (James) and Amy Schmidt Westerman (Eric); sons R. Scott Schmidt (Janice) and Raymond E. Schmidt (Jennifer); six grandchildren, James Thompson, Sara Finch, Hilary Schmidt, Andrew Schmidt, Jessica Schmidt, and Wyatt Schmidt; four great-grandchildren; his sister, Nancy Schmidt Nester; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to join the family for a gathering on Friday, November 22, 2024, from 3:00 until 5:00 pm at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo, NC. Inurnment will take place at All Saints Cemetery in Wilmington, DE, with details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Roanoke Island Food Pantry (PO Box 787, Manteo, NC 27954) or Assumption B.V.M. Parish (300 State Road, West Grove, PA 19390).
Ronald E. Schmidt will be fondly remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the love he shared with all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends.
