Cape Hatteras National Seashore Facilities Remain Open, Beach Driving Access Limited

After early morning assessment of Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches and facilities, Superintendent David Hallac announced today all park facilities in Cape Hatteras National Seashore remain open for the visiting public. 

A significant number of beach access ramps to popular park beaches are temporarily closed due to flooding, high, lunar tides and strong wind conditions and will remain closed until conditions improve.  Park staff are still assessing many of the areas for damage and unsafe conditions and updates will continue.

Park beaches are open to pedestrian access throughout the park unless otherwise posted.  Park visitors can expect to see some safety and/or resource protection closures in effect.

Some Cape Hatteras National Seashore facilities in Buxton and on Ocracoke Island experienced water leaks from windows and vents during the heavy, consistent rains and winds.  More assessment is being conducted.

Wright Brothers National Memorial and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site are open and were not significantly impacted by this storm event.  

All Park Visitor Centers and ORV permit offices are open and have resumed normal hours of operation.

Billy Mitchell and Ocracoke Airstrips are open.
