Dare County Master Gardeners announces 2024 Winter Library Garden Series
Are you interested in gardening and searching for a way to make your winter blues go away? Start planning your spring garden now with the 2024 Winter Library Garden Series presented by the North Carolina State Extension’s Dare County Master Gardeners in conjunction with the Dare County Library.
Each of the programs within the 2024 Winter Library Garden Series will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays in January, February, and March, and will be offered both in-person at the Kill Devil Hills Library as well as virtually. Presentations will last approximately one hour, and participants can choose to attend one or all of the programs that are of interest to them.
The 2024 series includes many brand-new programs that have never been offered before, as well as some of the most popular topics from years past. There is no charge to attend the programs; however, pre-registration is required whether participants plan to attend in person or virtually. “Challenge of Gardening on the Outer Banks”

The 2024 Winter Library Garden Series will kick off at
11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 with an updated version of the ”Challenge of Gardening on the Outer Banks” program. The Outer Banks has several distinct environments that challenge many gardeners, and during this program gardening techniques and plants that survive in these areas will be discussed.
“Plants that Survive & Thrive on the Outer Banks”

A new program, “Plants that Survive & Thrive on the Outer Banks,” will be presented at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Plants covered in this program include the Carolina Jessamine, Blue False Indigo, Gardenia, Abelia, Red Twig Dogwood, Persimmon and Florica Anise Tree.
“Pruning”
11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2024
February programs will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, with ”Pruning,” during which presenters will discuss the proper care of trees and shrubs and provide tips and techniques for keeping them looking great.
“Defend Your Home Against Wildfires (Firescaping)”

Landscaping can help create a defensible space around your home, reducing the risk of home wildfire ignition by modifying existing vegetation using low-flammability plants and landscape materials. The “Defend Your Home Against Wildfires (Firescaping)” program will be presented at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
“Propagation Methods: Cutting, Layering, Etc.”
11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2024
“Propagation Methods: Cutting, Layering, Etc.” is an updated program during which participants will learn various techniques for propagating plants, such as cutting, dividing and layering. This program will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
“Companion Planting”
11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2024
The 2024 Winter Library Garden Series will wrap up with another brand-new program: “Companion Planting.” Companion planting is best described as the practice of planting two or more plants together to enhance the growth and quality of nearby plants, to provide maximum ground cover, and, when possible, to improve nearby soil. The “Companion Planting” program will be presented at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.
