HIYEF Launches “Fuel for Focus” project to help Hatteras Island students and businesses
The Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund (HIYEF) has launched a new initiative that helps Cape Hatteras students have filling, family meals, while also supporting local businesses throughout the island community.
The new project, called Fuel for Focus, gives every Cape Hatteras Elementary School and Cape Hatteras Secondary School student $50.00 of “HIYEF Bucks” to be used at participating businesses for the purchase of take-out food or other food items. Nearly 20 businesses from all across the island have signed up to participate in the program, and the initiative has already garnered praise among students and businesses alike in the social media realm.
The idea was born shortly after the March 23 Executive Order from Governor Cooper to close all public schools until May 15.
“At that point, the HIYEF Team knew we had to spring into action,” stated the organization in an online update about the project. “We wanted our students and their families to know how much we cared for you, but more so than that, we wanted to show how we would be there to support you in the coming weeks of uncertainty.”
“After some researching, we found that food seemed to be the biggest issue for our families. From that idea, Fuel for Focus came to life over the following weeks.”
The goal of Fuel for Focus is twofold: to provide funding for meals to Hatteras Island students, and support local businesses that are currently servicing the island community during this challenging time of “Stay at Home”.
“Our hope for each family is that the use of ‘HIYEF Bucks’ will be a time of togetherness during mealtime. A moment to sit back, relax and let the comfort of family and food fill your hearts and tummies…. The students of Hatteras Island will remain the heart of the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund, and the reason that we work to sustain and provide for them in times of trial and triumph.”
