Rear Admiral Vann to deliver keynote address at 150th Anniversary of U.S. Life-Saving Service Commemoration on Saturday
The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Museum in Rodanthe will host a special commemoration on Saturday afternoon during the two-day 150th Anniversary of the U.S. Life-Saving Service celebration on October 12-13, and Rear Admiral John “Jay” Vann, Commander, Fifth Coast Guard District, will deliver the keynote address at this significant event.
The U.S. Life-Saving Service played a vital role in safeguarding lives and property along the nation’s coastlines.
Established in the 1870s, the service was instrumental in rescuing countless individuals from treacherous waters. In 1915, the Service was merged into the newly-created United States Coast Guard, which continues to serve our country, and the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Museum serves as a living testament to the history and legacy of these brave men and women.
The commemoration and two-day celebration will take place at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Museum in Rodanthe. The event is open to the public, and admission is free.
The weekend event features “the way it was done back then” on Saturday, October 12, and “the way it is done today” on Sunday, October 13, with talks, demonstrations, and exhibits, including U. S. Coast Guard boats and aircraft.
A complete schedule of the weekend’s events and updates can be found at Chicamacomico.org.
