HATTERAS–Claffee Eugene Mayo, III, 56, passed away on Sept. 6, 2007 athis home after a long courageous battle with lung and heartdisease. Gene was born on Aug. 4, 1951, in Concord, N.H. Gene was in the U.S. Coast Guard and retired as a Sr. Chief afteralmost 29 years of service. He loved his job. He started onthe USCG Cutter Gresham. He continued his career at the HatterasInlet Station, Chatham, Mass., Thomas Point Light and Annapolis CoastGuard Station, Yorktown Reserve Training Center, Georgetown, S.C., backto Yorktown, and then to Belle Isle Station and Group Detroit CoastGuard Base in Michigan.I.
Gene, Rosa-Alice, and Jeremy retired in Hatteras in 1997. Geneworked for a few years with the NCDOT, Ferry Division in Hatteras,until his health would not let him continue.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Rosa-Alice Gray Mayo;two sons that meant the world to him, Claffee Eugene Mayo, IV and wife,Tracy; and two beautiful grandchildren, Austin and Mikala of Lake Ann,Mich., and Jeremy Mayo of Hatteras.
He is also survived by his mother, Priscilla Mayo of Elizabeth Town,Ky.; two brothers, Maurice Mayo and wife, Joyce, of Gaffney, S.C., andBruce Mayo and wife, Dawn, of Palmetto, Fla.; two sisters, Mary EllenDuncan and husband, George, of Franklin, N.H. and Debra Houston andhusband, Danny, of Rineyville, Ky.
Gene is also survived by his in laws, Damon Gray, Jr. and wife, Nola;Peggy Gray Dorris; D.M. Gray, III and wife, Kristin; Debbie Hodge andhusband, Cliff; and Analee Bibbey and husband, Tom, all of Hatteras;Robin Boots of Manchester, N.H.; Diane Kelly and husband, Ron, ofRedway, Calif.; Robert E. Martin, Jr. and wife, Joanne, of Ripley,England, and many nephews and nieces. Gene was preceded in deathby his father, Claffee E. Mayo, Jr., mother-in-law, Alice A. Gray, andbrother-in-law, Larry Gray of Hatteras.
Funeral services with military honors will be held at Hatteras UnitedMethodist Church on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. CoryOliver officiating. The family will receive friends at TwifordIsland Chapel, Hatteras, on Friday evening from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hatteras UnitedMethodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 310, Hatteras, NC 27943.
