HATTERAS — William Dale Burrus, 65, passedaway suddenly on Sunday, October 7, 2007 in his home. A native ofHatteras, he was the eldest son of the late William Z. Burrus andMinnie Austin Burrus.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 41 years, LorraineHoward Burrus of the home; his children, Denise Ziegler and husband,Michael, of Easton, Md., and Margaret Humphrey and husband, Phil, ofRuskin, Fla.; and by his beloved grandchildren, Brett, Colin, Skyler,Hope and Chloe. He is also survived by his brother, Allen Burrus andwife, Marlene, of Hatteras; a sister, Carol Kidd and husband, Billy, ofWinterville, N.C.; brother-in-law Lindsey Howard of Ocracoke andElizabeth City, N.C.; nieces and nephews, Joshua, Jonathan, andJennifer Burrus, Lindsey, Jr. and William Howard, Gwen Austin, andChris Kidd.
He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Ann Howard, and niece, Lisa Kidd.
Dale attended Chowan College and later joined the U.S. Coast Guard. Hereturned to Hatteras in the 1960s to join his father in preserving theheritage of the family’s grocery business, and with his brother,parents, and wife, he continued to do so until his passing.
He was past president of the Hatteras Village Civic Association, a pastdirector and chairman of the board and current member of the Board ofDirectors of the Cape Hatteras Electric Co-op, and founding member andpast director of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.
His greatest passions included the preservation of the Banker Poniesand Spanish Mustangs, the building of the Graveyard of the AtlanticMuseum, and the preservation of Hatteras Island and its history.
The family will receive guests on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 7 until 8:30p.m. at Twiford Island Chapel, Hatteras. Funeral services will be atthe Hatteras United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Graveyard of theAtlantic Museum, POB 191, Hatteras, NC, 27943, or the Building Funds ofHatteras United Methodist Church or Little Grove United MethodistChurch at POB 310 Hatteras, NC 27943.
