Memorial Service will be Aug. 28 for Cathy Lynn Burrus Smith
A celebration of the life of Cathy Lynn Burrus Smith will be onSaturday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Buxton United MethodistChurch. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Cory Oliverandthe Rev. Dwight Burrus. It will be followed by a committalservice with military honors in the Quidley Cemetery in Buxton, whereCathy Lynn will be buried beside her father, Conrad Burrus, Sr., andher brother, Conrad Burrus, Jr.
Cathy Lynn, 50, died in a tragic accident on Thursday, July 22, 2010,in Buxton while she was visiting her mother.
She was the daughter of Cathy Burrus of Buxton and late Conrad BurrusSr. and the wife of William P. Smith of Orange Park, Fla.
Cathy Lynn was born on Sept. 1, 1959 in Victoria, Tex., and grew up onHatteras Island, her father’s home and her mother’s adoptedhome. She graduated from Cape Hatteras School in 1977, attended MethodistCollege in Fayetteville, N.C., and joined the U.S. Navy in1986. She served as an Oceanographic Technician Analyst in Iceland and Walesand as an Aviations Electronic Technician in Jacksonville, Fla., untilher retirement from the Navy as a Petty Office Second Class in 1994.
After her retirement from the Navy, Cathy Lynn earned her bachelor’sdegree with honors from University of Phoenix and was almost finishedwith her master’s degree. She worked as a project manager for VerizonBusiness, where she handled the account for CSX, a large transportationcompany based in Jacksonville.
She was married to Bill Smith in May, 1994, at the Buxton UnitedMethodist Church, and they lived in Orange Park with their fourdogs. They hosted several foreign exchange students, andCathyLynn enjoyed her new hobby of riding her Harley with Bill.
Cathy Lynn was baptized in the brand-new Buxton United Methodist Churchon April 2, 1961, and joined the church on April 2, 1972. Shewasa 25-year member of the Hatteras Island Chapter No. 303 of the Order ofthe Eastern Star.
Cathy Lynn was predeceased by her father, Conrad Burrus, Sr. and herbrother Conrad Burrus, Jr.
In addition to her husband and her mother, she is survived by herbrother, Travis Burrus, and a loving family of aunts, uncles, nieces,nephews, stepdaughters, and friends.
Cathy Lynn will be remembered as a loving, caring person, alwayswilling to lend a helping hand.
