FRISCO– Ila Matson Smith (1927 – 2011) passed away peacefully, in her sleep,at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born inPittsburgh,Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Shields Matson and thelate Ila Elizabeth McBurney. She is also preceded in death byherhusband, Raymond Charles Edward Smith. A resident of HatterasIsland since 1978, she was a graduate of Carnegie Tech (now CarnegieMellon), majoring in Art. Ila was a well known artist, andmanyof her works can be found at local art galleries.
Ms. Smith issurvived by her daughters, Holly Smith West of Frisco and Shawn MatsonBudd (husband, Tom) of Waterlily. Also surviving are herthreegrandchildren, Spring Weight (husband, Brian) of Pittsburgh, Pa.,Heather Gardiner (husband, Krage) of Manteo, and Ben Budd (wife, Suzy)of State College, Pa. Also left to cherish her memory are herfour great-grandchildren, Daniel, Chase, Taylor, and Ella. Ila isalso survived by her sister, Ethel Campbell, and nephew, KevinCampbell, both of Scottsdale, Ariz.
The family will honor herrequest to be cremated and have no funeral. However, thefamilywill host an open house for family and visitors on Sunday, Nov. 27,from 1 until 4 p.m. at their residence, 51233 Lullaby Lane inFrisco. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ms. IlaSmithcan be made to the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 639, Buxton,NC 27920.
