BUXTON — Robert Drane Harkey,“Bob,” 71,formerly of Charlotte, N.C., died on Dec. 13, 2011 at his home after anextended illness.
Mr. Harkey was born April 29, 1940 to S. Drane Harkey and Lois BrownHarkey. He graduated from East Mecklenburg High School andthenwent on to serve four years in the United States Navy. Afteranhonorable discharge, he returned to Charlotte to work alongside hisfather at Harkey’s Nursery. He later owned and operatedHarkey’sGarden Center on Monroe Road in Charlotte. Mr. Harkey was anavidfisherman and loved living on Hatteras Island.
Mr. Harkey is survived by one daughter, Susan Harkey Simpson, andhusband George of Mint Hill, N.C.; one grandson, Tyler Haney of MintHill; one sister, Jean H. Harkey of Asheville, and his former wife,Barbara P. Campbell of Charlotte.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, atTwiford Funeral Home, Island Chapel, on Kohler Drive, in Hatteras, withthe Rev. Dwight Burrus officiating. In lieu of flowers,memorialscan be made to the American Diabetes Association at 222 A.S. ChurchStreet, Suite 336M, Charlotte, NC 28202 or to Mulberry PresbyterianChurch at 5600 Tuckaseegee Road, Charlotte, NC 28208.
