BUXTON — Winnie Wilkinson Gray passed away at her home in the early hours of May 7, 2013 at the age of 94.
Winnieis predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Winnie Wilkinson, threesisters, Bessie Taylor and husband Paul, Edna Watson and husband Jim,and Mae Turner and husband Bob; two aunts Vivian Godwin and MaeYoungblood, and two granddaughters, Carol Gray and Jenny Gray.
She is survived by her loving husband of more than 70 years, Thomas B. Gray, Sr.
Winnieis lovingly remembered by her children, Thomas B. Gray Jr. and wifeNancy of Buxton and Charles Gray and wife Vivian of North Fort Meyers,Fla.; her grandchildren, Amy Gray, Jack Gray and wife Tina, HeatherJennette and husband Leo, and TC Gray and Amanda Smith;great-grandchildren, Travis Robins, Graham Robins, Owen Gray, CadenGray and another soon to arrive; nieces Betty Hunter and EdnaMaePerkins, and special family friend, Mary Robinson.
Winnie wasborn in Gastonia, N.C., in 1919. After high school she went on toearn her teaching degree at Western Carolina University. Shebegan her teaching career at Cape Hatteras. She then moved toNorfolk, Va., to teach and eventually became the head of the sciencedepartment for the city school system. After more than 20 years ofteaching, she attempted to retire back to Cape Hatteras but was coaxedinto teaching another 10 years there.
Winnie was an activemember of the Buxton United Methodist Church where she taught the adultSunday school class for many years and was a member of the MethodistWomen. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, teaching others,traveling, boating and was an avid sports fan.
Officialvisitation will be held at Buxton United Methodist Church on Friday,May 10, from 7 until 9 p.m., and friends are welcome to come by thehome in the days preceding.
The funeral service will be held atBuxton United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 11, at 11 a.m. withReverend Ken Davenport officiating. A graveside service willfollow immediately thereafter at Quidley Cemetery in Buxton.
