FRISCO– Hazen Haile Fairbank Totton, 84, died on Wednesday Oct. 16, 2013 atNorfolk General Hospital from complications of a chronic disease. Hazen was born March 15, 1929 in Charleston, W.Va, to Charles WilliamFairbank and Hazen Haile Fairbank, and grew up in Pelham, N. Y. She was married on Oct. 21, 1950 in Pelham, N.Y., to the late StephenMalcolm Totton of Larchmont, N.Y.
Hazen graduated from SarahLawrence College in New York and worked as a secretary andadministrative assistant throughout her lifetime. Afterliving in Levittown, N.Y., Coral Gables, Fla., Pikesville, Md., UpperSt. Clair, Pa., and Downers Grove, Ill., Hazen and her husbandfulfilled a life-long dream of retiring to Hatteras Island in 1987 andshortly after, purchased the Cape Pines Motel in Buxton. She wasco-owner and manager of the motel for about 10 years. One ofHazen’s proudest achievements was to be a co-founder of the HatterasIsland Business Association, of which she was president for severalyears. She was also the original proponent of a bike path onHatteras Island for which she worked tirelessly. Upon retiringfrom the motel, she was known to many residents for her warm, friendlygreeting from the front office at Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative,where she worked for many years.
Hazen is survived by daughters,Diane Andre (Keith) of Frisco, Day Smith (Frank) of Buxton, and sonFrank Totton (Donna) of Hanna City, Ill. She has fivegrandchildren, Jason Andre (Jada), Matt Smith (Adrienne), DanielleSkeen (Randy), Keli Totton, and Kyle Totton. She is pre-deceasedby husband Stephen Totton and by daughter Nancy CeceliaTotton. Hazen is also pre-deceased by a brother, CharlesWilliam Fairbank Jr.
A Memorial Service will be held at LittleGrove Church in Frisco on Sunday Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. and will beofficiated by Rev. Dwight Burrus. A reception will be held atHazen’s home in Frisco after the service.
