OCRACOKE– Edgar Maurice Ballance, 87, died Friday, July 11, 2014 at hisresidence. Born in Ocracoke, he was the son of the late Elisha and EmmaGaskins Ballance. He was a retired port captain with the NCDOT FerryDivision, a commercial fisherman, a carpenter, and was a veteran havingserved his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the KoreanConflict.
Mr. Ballance is survived by his wife, Maude GarrishBallance; a daughter, Judy Ballance Lawson and husband, Michael ofOcracoke; a sister, Lorena Ballance O’Neal of Ocracoke, and twograndchildren, Michael Brandon Lawson and Marcus Andrew Lawson. Inaddition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, ElsieGarrish and Clara Joyce Ballance, and five brothers, Henry, Lawrence,Elisha, Jr., William and Reginald Ballance.
A memorial servicewill be held Thursday, July 17, at 1 p.m. at Ocracoke United MethodistChurch by the Rev. Richard Bryant. In lieu of flowers, memorialdonations may be made to Ocracoke Health Center, P.O. Box 543,Ocracoke, NC 27960.
