Ed Conjura, a man of sharp wit, amazing energy, and a truly remarkable mind, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, at the age of 82. Ed lived a life that was anything but ordinary – full of laughter, adventure, and a love of learning. Ed’s academic journey was impressive as it was unique. From his humble beginnings in a coal mining town to earning degrees from Bloomsburg University (bachelor’s), Notre Dame University (master’s) and Rutgers University, where he earned a PhD in mathematics. Even though Ed held the title “doctor,” he was anything but formal or stuffy. As a professor, his students admired him for his intellect as well as his irreverence. A daily class topic was “What socks are you wearing today, Dr. C?” Along with his high unwavering standards (a deadline is a deadline), Ed used his imagination to make math relevant and interesting, and complex problems approachable. A respected department chair for years and academic leader at his college, Ed was also a friend, mentor, and cherished colleague. Outside the classroom, he worked as a computer consultant and software designer, often telling family “I just need to run one more program.”
Ed was a man of many passions. He was active and loved sailing, biking, hiking, skiing, and running. Many an afternoon was spent at the marina with friends “messing about in boats.” He was a lifelong international traveler; he and his daughter planned and embarked on many adventures around the globe. Friends and family members often gathered in his home, where classic rock music, such as Pink Floyd or Jackson Brown, was usually playing. Ed was never without a “project” involving his power tools. “Having the right tool is a key to life,” he would often say. Another passion and his favorite way to unwind after a busy day was to watch the sunset over the water from his favorite rocker on the deck of his home; there are almost a hundred sunset photos saved on his phone! A die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan and proud Notre Dame alum, Ed was loyal to his teams. While he had no shortage of musings on sports, current events, and the best way to make chicken wings, his humor was the thread that connected all his interests. He often said, “They can’t make this stuff up!” Another favorite saying was “a place for everything and everything in its’ place.”
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Edward, and his brother, Joe. He is survived by his loving wife, Roberta “Birdie,” who shared his love of friends and family, laughter, and adventure; his daughter, Emily and her husband, Clint; his former wife, Nancy; his stepdaughter Jessica and her husband, Clay; his stepson, Derek; granddaughters Sophie and Kaya and step-grandsons Parker and Cooper. He also leaves behind siblings Theresa and John, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were all blessed to know him.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring.
