March 10, 1950 – January 26, 2021
MANTEO — Gilbert (Gil) Jerome Joseph of Manteo, died January 26, 2021 after a brief illness with his wife, Susan, and his son, Chris, at his bedside. He was born March 10, 1950 to Florence and Steven Joseph just outside Pittsburgh, PA. He served in the US Navy as a medic during the Vietnam War, and spent a great deal of his life in retail management at Kauffman’s Department Stores and Joseph Horne Company, both of Pittsburgh, along with several other retail chains before moving south to North Carolina. His family located in Asheville where he and his wife owned an upscale wine and gift shop, before getting the bug for the warmer weather of the Outer Banks. Currently, Gil worked at Lowe’s and loved the people he worked with and the people he helped.
Gil is survived by his wife and best friend of 40 years, Susan; his son, Christopher Joseph, followed his parents to the Outer Banks and currently works in Duck; and his mother-in-law, Emmie Rollason, who lives with them.
Gil loved being outside and working on some project in the yard or around the house – that was his hobby. He loved people and having a good time. He loved his sand dollar. He loved the family dog, Sterling. Remarkably, he kept his keen sense of humor right to the end. His was a life well lived with family always being at the center.
A celebration of life will be held in June with family and friends. To memorialize his life, please send a donation to https://www.pancan.org/honormemorial-gifts/ for research on pancreatic cancer.
